Although the tram itself is a wondrous feat of engineering, it only comes is second after the amazing view that it gives its passengers. From this height it is easy to see why New Mexico is called the Land of Enchantment. The tram ascends 4,000 feet in 15 minutes. No matter what time of day you arrive, the view is unparalleled. Located on the far-eastern edge of Albuquerque, the tram is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Central New Mexico. As the tram ascends, to the west the Mount Taylor is clearly visible despite being over 70 miles in the distance. To the northwest, Redondo Peak stands tall in the Jemez Mountains beside a volcanic crater reported to be the largest in the world. In stark contrast, to the east, lies the heavily forested area of the Sandias and on the far horizon, the New Mexican capital, Santa Fe. From the top of Sandia Peak visitors may hike along the forest trail. The Four Seasons Visitors Centre is also located here. The centre opens from May to November and is staffed by Forest Rangers. Robert Nordhaus, one of the founders and owners of the Sandia Peak Ski Company was inspired to construct the tram after a journey to Europe. He had hopes to construct a tram similar to ones he had seen there. It would connect Albuquerque with the summit of Sandia Peak providing safe and efficient transportation for skiers as well as becoming a top tourist attraction. |
