Another highlight of Albuquerque is the Gathering of Nations Powwow. It takes place annually at the end of April in the University of New Mexico and it is the largest powwow in the world. Native American tribes from all over the United States and Canada come to compete against each other and to exhibit the traditions and artistic talents of their tribe. Over 3000 Native Americans from over 500 tribes ascend on Albuquerque to participate socially and competitively. On Founders Day that celebrates the city's settlement in 1706 statues of patron saints are paraded through the streets accompanied with much singing, dancing and other entertainment. The powwow is a great place to familiarise yourself with Native American culture. Dance competitions, songs and displays of Native American arts and crafts. One of the most spectacular events is the Grand Entry of Dancers where hundreds of men, women and children dressed in traditional ceremonial costume, enter the arena dancing to the beat of tribal drums. The Gathering of Nations Powwow also hosts the annual Miss Indian World event. Girls from all over the Indian world compete for this prestigious title. The girls are assessed on personality, tribal knowledge and dancing ability. This is a popular event so if you want to get a good seat for the Miss Indian World pageant it is advisable to book your ticket a few weeks in advance.
