Albuquerque is known as the hot-air balloon capital of the world. On any weekend you will see over 25 balloons in the air. However it is the annual balloon Fiesta that the city is famed for. This festival is one of the biggest tourist attractions in New Mexico attracting over one million visitors every year. It takes place over nine days in October with balloon enthusiasts coming from all over the globe resulting in a kaleidoscope of over 900 balloons soaring skywards at sunrise. The festival was founded in 1972 with 13 balloons and with time has grown to increase in popularity and numbers to become the most photographed event in the world. The Fiesta also includes the International Gas Balloon Race and support activities including a Southwest Arts and Crafts Fair just outside Fiesta Park, fireworks, parties, food booths, and more. The Night Balloon Glow where over 400 balloons glow in the sky, is not to be missed. For those who are interested in more than just spectating, why not sign up to be a member of a balloon ground crew. The association does not require you to have prior experience. For the more adventurous, trips are available that allow tourists to enjoy the city from a different perspective. Standard balloons accommodate up to four passengers. Shop around as different companies offer different deals. Some companies offer sunrise flights served with a full breakfast and a glass of champagne. It is recommended that you make a reservation. |
