Another unusual and interesting museum is the National Atomic Museum. Having been moved from Los Alamos for security reasons after September 11th, it is now located 1905 Mountain Road NW, Albuquerque. It is the U.S.A's only chartered museum of nuclear science and nuclear history. The museum was established in 1969 as a place to promote knowledge and understanding of the Atomic Age. It details early research in nuclear development to present day use of atomic energy. You will be surprised to learn how nuclear science influences our world. The museum also exhibits displays on the pioneers of science such as Marie Curie, Albert Einstein and Lise Meitner as well as the Manhattan Project to develop an atomic bomb.Other exhibits are titled Seeing is Healing, a look at nuclear medicine and Waging Peace, the history of arms control. Museum visitors can view and photograph the displays including replicas of the world's first two atomic weapons. For younger visitors the museum has an interactive learning facility called the Zoomzone where they can try their hand at scientific activities. Don't be put off if Science wasn't your best subject in school. You will still find the impact that nuclear energy has on our daily lives fascinating. |
