Whether you are in the mood for something relaxing or something more physical, Albuquerque has something to offer. With the city's location in the Rio Grande valley and with the backdrop of the Sandia Mountains, hiking is a popular tourist activity. If you only have time for one hike while in town, make it the La Luz Trail. This stunning 7 mile hike takes you through desert and forest, offering spectacular views of Albuquerque, the West Mesa and the Sandia Mountains beyond. In summer mountain bikers can use Sandia Peak's chairlifts with their bikes for some downhill cycling. If you want to get a sense of the Wild West, several local companies offer horse and pony trekking. During the winter, head for Sandia Peak Ski Area. Twenty-six ski runs cater for every ability from complete beginner to advanced. You can reach Sandia Peak by tram or via Highways 14 and 536. If fishing's your thing, Sandia Lakes Recreation Area consists of three lakes containing large supplies of trout and bass. For those who prefer to stay around the city, the Old Town is the best location for shopping and finding souvenirs. Visit the many museums and galleries that are dotted around the city. After, you can take time out to sample the different cuisines that the city has to offer. Originally the preserve of Spanish priests, wine production has experienced a revival in recent years. There are now several vineyards in or near the city offering tastings and tours. |
